Medicine Safety : Take Care report (Jan 2019) by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia

It reports on the Australia-wide state of adverse medication events.

  • 1.2 million Australians have experienced an adverse medication event in the last 6 months.
  • 250,000 hospital admissions annually are a result of medication-related problems, at an anual cost of $1.4 billion.
  • An additional 400,000 presentations to emergency departments are likely to be due to medication-related problems.
  • 50% of this is preventable.

People with low vision can often struggle with reading medicine information on labels, which can lead to incorrect use

In its largest survey into the experiences of blind and partially sighted people, the Royal National Institute for Blind people (RNIB) discovered nine out of ten participants found information on medication was quite difficult or impossible to read.

(NSQHS) 6. Communicating For Safety

The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards were developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care with the Australian Government, state and territory partners, consumers and the private sector. This document is the part of the standard, called “6. Communicating For Safety”, which aims to ensure that there is effective communication between patients, carers and families, multidisciplinary teams and clinicians, and across the health service organisation, to support continuous, coordinated and safe care for patients. The new standard recognises that effective communication is needed throughout patients’ care and identifies high-risk times when effective communication is critical.

We have volunteer positions available for people who are passionate about the health sector, and reducing adverse drug events.

This role involves planning and conducting effective ‘engagement campaigns’, which may include providing stakeholders (such as pharmacies and community service organisations) with promotional materials and making presentations to raise awareness for adverse drug events.
